AMD's rumored AI chip variant for handhelds

There's a rumor that AMD is developing a new chip for handheld gaming devices. It's part of their Ryzen Z2 lineup, and the big focus is apparently on AI performance.

Word on the street is that AMD wants to step up its game in the handheld market. They just announced the Z2 series, but it looks like they might have something even more powerful in the works. A well-known leaker, @AnhPhuH, spilled the beans about a possible "Ryzen Z2 AI Extreme" model. This bad boy would likely have some serious AI chops compared to the regular Z2 chips.

You might be thinking, "Why does a handheld gaming device need AI power?" Well, AMD probably wants to compete with Intel's upcoming Lunar Lake chips, which are supposed to have decent AI capabilities. The standard Z2 chips will have their AI bits turned off for gaming handhelds, but the rumored Ryzen Z2 AI Extreme would kick things up a notch.

There's also talk of a budget-friendly "Ryzen Z2 A" model with AI features. We don't know much about it yet, but it's probably going to be a more affordable option for handhelds that still want some AI goodness. All in all, it looks like the Z2 series will have five different chips to choose from. That's a lot of options for companies making these devices!

Just to give you a quick rundown, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is expected to be the top dog. It'll have eight cores, 16 threads, and a maximum boost clock of 5.0 GHz. Plus, it's got a bunch of cache, adjustable power usage, and 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores. It's even based on the fancy new "Strix Point" design, which makes it the first Zen5 chip for handhelds. The Z2 Go and the regular Z2 will be based on older designs, but they'll still pack a punch.
