Angola groups tattle to the UN about Lourenco

Five Angola civil society organizations petitioned United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres for an international investigation into deadly police violence. The groups demand an independent fact-finding mission to examine security force actions during late July taxi strikes that killed approximately 30 people. Officers fired live ammunition and conducted mass arrests when protests against fuel price increases spread beyond transportation workers. Police detained 1,500 individuals during the three-day unrest period, though authorities released some suspects on bail. The organizations argue systematic violations and widespread impunity require UN intervention.

President Joao Lourenco defended security forces after the violence ended, stating they acted appropriately while restoring public order. The strikes began when taxi drivers protested government decisions to reduce fuel subsidies under International Monetary Fund and World Bank pressure. Angola faces severe economic challenges as roughly one-third of citizens survive below international poverty thresholds. Civil society groups submitted their formal request on Tuesday while Lourenco addressed the UN General Assembly that same day.
