Archbishop - No wedding unless the groom has GH¢100K in the bank

A preacher says men need a huge bank balance before even planning a wedding. Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams declared no man should marry unless he can show he has at least one hundred thousand Ghana cedis saved. He warned against starting a union buried in debt, describing lavish ceremonies without financial readiness as a dangerous mindset. The church should discourage extravagant weddings without proven groom resources, he argued.

He told congregants that marriage differs completely from a wedding ceremony. Love cannot pay rent or cover bills, only practical provisions can, he stated. He criticized the social obsession with white weddings and large receptions. Many couples lack money for a basic apartment, yet still want a costly event, which he called a liability for anyone still building wealth.

As an alternative, he proposed simple group blessings during regular Sunday services. This model would involve exchanging rings without a best man, bridesmaids, or a reception. The couple would then just go home and build their family life. He directly advised single women to desire a husband over a white dress, urging an end to the wedding obsession.

He also criticized the practice of borrowing money to fund marriage celebrations. Helping people marry when financially unprepared only invites deeper future hardship, he cautioned. His remarks ignited strong reactions and a broader conversation on financial responsibility within marriage. The archbishop framed his advice as a necessary shift towards practicality and stability for couples.
