Art goes local as National Gallery shifts focus

The National Art Gallery is pursuing a significant shift in its mission, moving beyond its traditional role as a central repository. Director-General Amerrudin Ahmad explained that the institution is now actively decentralizing Malaysian art, focusing on community engagement beyond Kuala Lumpur. This new approach involves supporting artists who create work within rural villages and fishing communities.

He cited specific examples, such as a Sabah artist who constructed a functional icebox sculpture with a local Bajau community. Another artist in Raub, Mohamad Ismadi Sallehudin, has built strong local ties through his studio. A mural in Kuala Terengganu even serves as a navigational guide for fishermen. Amerrudin stated that this strategy elevates local businesses and leverages community wisdom, making art a practical and integrated part of daily life across the nation.
