Arvind Panagariya sees a major breakthrough in the India-US deal

Finance Commission Chairman Arvind Panagariya addressed an audience at a New York event hosted by the CSIS Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics. He emphasized a strong Indian interest in finalizing trade agreements with the United States. The official stated that such partnerships would expand market access for domestic exporters. Business leaders anticipate significant benefits from reduced tariffs on labor-intensive products. Economic cooperation between the two nations could transform global investment patterns.

Panagariya highlighted changing trade dynamics amid rising American tariff policies worldwide. He expressed optimism about potential agreements with both Washington and Brussels. Negotiations with the European Union have progressed through twelve rounds since June 2022. Officials aim to complete the EU partnership by December 2025. The recently finalized United Kingdom agreement demonstrates India's commitment to expanding international commerce.

President Trump recently indicated proximity to completing bilateral trade discussions with India. Commerce Department Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal led Indian negotiators during recent Washington meetings. Panagariya acknowledged widespread governmental enthusiasm for advancing these economic partnerships despite his current non-governmental role.
