ASUS brings back button release for GPUs after Q-Release backlash

ASUS is admitting defeat on that awful latchless GPU slot design because the community absolutely hated the ambiguity. The hardware giant confirmed the 2026 Neo AM5 motherboard series returns to a classic button-assisted release method instead of keeping the controversial Q-Release Slim. This adjustment spans every tier from wallet-friendly B850 decks up to the elite X870E flagships.

Enthusiasts loathed the previous system since it required yanking graphics cards without a clear unlock signal. That uncertainty reportedly resulted in scratched PCIe contacts and ruined connectors during removal attempts. Although the brand silently removed a jagged metal component earlier in March 2025, the reputation damage lingered as PC gamers refused to risk breaking expensive video cards.

Corporate representatives argue the pivot stems purely from user confusion regarding how the latch worked. A North American spokesperson explained that buyers specifically demanded a visible trigger to ensure safe extraction. Providing a physical switch stops novices from wrecking slots with lateral force while guessing if the mechanism actually disengaged.

The clearer retention toggle arrives on the entire refreshed roster, like the ROG Crosshair X870E Glacial and Dark Hero. Middle options receiving the fix involve the ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi7 Neo, ROG Strix X870E-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo, and TUF Gaming X870-Pro WiFi7 W Neo. The update also covers the ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo, ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo, TUF Gaming B850-PRO WiFi7 W Neo, and ProArt B850-Creator WiFi Neo.
