Lachlan Kennedy powered past his African rivals during Saturday's 100-meter race at the Kip Keino Classic. The 21-year-old Australian clocked a personal best 9.98 seconds to win the sprint in Nairobi. Kennedy beat Bayanda Wazala from South Africa and Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala for the victory. The young sprinter felt amazed when he saw his winning time on the scoreboard. Kennedy had run 6.45 seconds over 60 meters during January competition in Canberra. Wazala finished second with a time of 10.03 seconds at age 19. The South African runner continues learning from experienced sprinters like Akani Simbine and Omanyala. Zakithi Nene delivered the fastest 400-meter time of the year at 43.76 seconds. The 27-year-old South African runner beat Nigerian Chidi Okezi who finished at 44.89 seconds. Nene improved from his previous best of 44.22 seconds set during April. Jonah Koech won the 800-meter race for the United States in 1 minute 43.32 seconds. The Kenyan-born athlete had captured a 1500-meter Diamond League victory the previous weekend. Trinidad's Andersen Peters struggled in javelin and placed seventh at 77.49 meters. Brazilian Luiz Mauricio da Silva dominated the javelin with 86.34 meters. Canadian Ethan Katzberg threw 82.73 meters to win the hammer competition.
