Bangladesh media storm as CRAB editors rage over July Movement threats

Two major media groups slammed threats made against news reporters last week. The Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association and Online Editors Alliance fired back at a July Movement leader who attacked journalists. Hasan Sharif and Mizanur Rahman Sohel released a joint statement defending press freedom. They reminded everyone that media serves as the fourth pillar of democracy. The groups stressed that anyone upset about news stories can file complaints through proper channels.

The statement pointed out that legal options already exist for people who disagree with media coverage. Citizens can take their concerns to the Press Council or file court cases under current laws. Sharif and Sohel made it clear that intimidation tactics cross the line. They called such behavior completely unacceptable and harmful to democratic values. The alliance leaders emphasized that independent journalism must be protected from threats.

Crime reporters association president Mirza Mehedi Tamal joined the criticism on Monday. He teamed up with general secretary M.M. Badsha to condemn the intimidation campaign. Both men argued that threatening journalists goes against everything the July uprising stood for. They reminded critics that students fought and died specifically to secure press freedom. The leaders warned that such threats damage the country's democratic progress and discourage fair reporting.
