A banking employee lost his entire retirement savings after falling victim to fraudsters advertising vehicles online. The 52-year-old man discovered what appeared to be a legitimate four-wheel drive advertisement on Facebook during early July. Scammers directed him through WhatsApp conversations and requested personal identification documents along with advance payments. The criminals claimed their business operated from Port Klang in Selangor state.
Fraudsters convinced the victim to transfer money across multiple transactions over several weeks. Between July 9 and July 21, the employee sent funds through 40 separate payments distributed among eight different bank accounts. The total amount reached RM241,700, which represented his complete EPF savings and personal funds. The victim became suspicious when perpetrators demanded an additional RM31,000 for supposed customs fingerprinting fees.
Kuala Terengganu police received the complaint yesterday morning at 9:37am from the devastated officer. Investigators have opened a case under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which addresses cheating and fraud offenses. ACP Azli Mohd Noor confirmed that authorities are actively pursuing the matter. The police chief warned others about similar online vehicle purchase schemes targeting unsuspecting buyers.
