Barrow says Gambia tourism is on a roll

President Adama Barrow talked about tourism during his speech to lawmakers on Thursday. He said tourism helps create jobs and brings money from other countries. The president wants more visitors to come to Gambia each year. He thinks tourism makes local businesses stronger and helps the economy grow. The government plans to keep working on making tourism better.

Gambia welcomed 227,000 tourists last year compared to 2023. This means 10 percent more people visited the country. New airplane routes from Scandinavia and Nigeria brought more travelers. The government worked hard on marketing to attract visitors. These efforts helped bring more people to Gambian hotels and attractions.

The president expects even more tourists to arrive next year. Officials want to reach 336,787 visitors coming through airports. This number comes from the national development plan targets. The government believes they can hit these goals with continued work. Marketing and better airplane connections will help achieve this growth.

Barrow wants to focus more on nature tourism and wildlife watching. Bird watchers and people who love animals will find new places to visit. The World Bank helps fund special resorts and camps around the country. These projects will give tourists different things to do during their trips. Nature lovers will have more reasons to pick Gambia for vacations.

Government officials studied all the major tourist spots for the first time ever. They picked ten important places that need more investment money. This research helps leaders make smart choices about where to spend funds. The president believes this careful planning will make tourism even stronger. Better tourist sites will keep bringing more visitors to the country.
