Binance probes reported $6.3B crypto heist tied to North Korea

Binance is reportedly dealing with a US$6.3 billion crypto theft linked to hackers from North Korea. The alleged breach has raised major concerns, with claims that the attackers pulled off the theft in less than half an hour.

If confirmed, the amount would set a new record for stolen crypto. Bybit lost US$1.5 billion in an earlier attack, but the sum reported in the Binance case is more than four times as large.

Blockchain research firm TRM Labs has reportedly traced the activity to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking crew with a history of targeting digital currency firms.

The scale of the alleged operation is wild. Reports suggest the attackers moved funds through eight blockchain networks after spending at least 36 hours preparing their operation.

Ari Redbord, who handles policy at TRM Labs, pointed to both the huge value and the pace of the reported theft. He also noted that the FBI had linked the same hacking group to the Bybit incident.

Binance has reportedly halted deposits and cash-outs while its security team looks into the breach. For customers trying to access their crypto, that means transfers could be affected while the review continues.

But the company has offered some reassurance. Binance says customer assets remain secure and has pledged to reimburse losses tied to the alleged attack.

With more than 335 million users claimed by the platform, the situation has drawn plenty of attention. Customers have also been advised to watch for scams that may exploit fears about the breach.

Meanwhile, efforts to block the movement of stolen crypto have reportedly locked up assets valued above US$3 billion. That's a large amount, although it doesn't mean the money has made its way back to its rightful holders.

TRM Labs estimates that the hackers may still have control of roughly US$2.4 billion in Bitcoin and Ether. Recovering those assets could prove difficult, even with blockchain tracking tools.

Chapin Fay, the executive director at Crypto Watchdog, raised that exact concern. He cautioned that blocking access to stolen coins and getting them back to victims are two different things.

Fay also called attention to the risks customers face when major trading platforms suffer security failures. He argued that users need better protection and clear plans for dealing with stolen funds.

The reported breach has also rattled crypto prices. Bitcoin fell by roughly 5 percent over 24 hours, leaving it near US$77,000. Several smaller coins saw steeper declines, with losses close to 10 percent.

For Binance, the key issue is whether investigators can confirm the full scale of the alleged theft and recover the assets. Its promise to compensate affected users will also face scrutiny as the investigation develops.
