Kampala Appeal Court judges refused to reduce Christopher Damulira's prison sentence for raping a teenage girl. Three justices said the motorcycle taxi driver must serve his full 28 years and 2 months behind bars. Damulira attacked a 17-year-old student after picking her up from a graduation party on March 29, 2018. He stopped his bike and claimed he ran out of fuel before dragging the victim into nearby bushes. The girl hired Damulira because she knew him from the local area.
Damulira pleaded guilty during his original trial before High Court Judge Winifred Nabisinde. The victim suffered bleeding and bruises from the attack and needed medical care afterward. Police arrested Damulira and charged him with rape following the assault. His lawyers argued the court made mistakes during the trial process and gave him an unfair sentence. The appeal judges rejected all three arguments Damulira's legal team presented.
Justice Christopher Gashirabake said rape cases can carry death sentences under Uganda law. The court found no problems with the original trial or sentencing procedures. Damulira will continue serving his remaining prison time as ordered.
