Bucheon Hospital creates drug program for young kids

Medical professionals from SoonChunHyang University Bucheon Hospital created an educational initiative targeting elementary students after teenage drug violations increased nearly 16 times between 2011 and 2024. The Ministry of Health and Welfare commissioned this dual-approach program to address rising criminal activity among minors. Supreme Prosecutors' Office data shows 649 minors faced drug-related investigations during 2024, compared to 41 cases three years earlier. National Police Agency statistics reveal that people under 40 committed 63 percent of all drug violations last year. The program applies social and emotional learning methods to help children develop decision-making skills and resist peer pressure.

Researchers designed separate curricula for different grade levels within elementary schools. Students in grades one through three learn responsibility and help-seeking behaviors during challenging situations. Fourth through sixth graders receive advanced instruction on stress management and peer pressure resistance techniques. Trial implementation at Samjeong Elementary School in Bucheon demonstrated strong student acceptance. Younger students showed 81 percent approval rates while older participants expressed 87 percent support for the prevention program.
