Bulawayo residents gut fire hydrants for beer and laundry money

Fire crews battle a mounting crisis as vandals destroy critical water supplies across Bulawayo. Criminals strip metal components from emergency hydrants while desperate residents damage valves seeking free water access. Chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo reveals that nearly one-third of the city's 4,332 hydrants have been rendered useless by theft and tampering. Firefighters must summon additional water trucks when hydrants fail during emergencies. The brigade struggles to protect lives and property without reliable backup water sources.

Western suburbs display the worst damage with hydrants buried under rubble or completely dismantled. Residents openly wash clothes around vandalized equipment along Masiyephambili Road near the municipal water reservoir. Old Magwegwe locals admit they illegally tap hydrants to reduce household bills despite knowing the practice harms emergency services. Community leader Sylvia Nkomo blames local youth who steal cast iron covers and sell them to scrap dealers in Kelvin industrial area. The stolen metal funds drinking and smoking habits among teenagers.

Operation Florian charity from Britain has provided digital mapping technology to help firefighters locate intact hydrants. Tablet computers store precise coordinates of every hydrant throughout the metropolitan area. The partnership gives crews instant access to backup water locations during fire emergencies. Moyo warns that continued vandalism will cripple the brigade's ability to save lives and property. Communities must protect public infrastructure or face devastating consequences when disasters strike.
