Somebody is literally hugging a tree for days to call out graft. Flora Onyango, a twenty-three-year-old from Mbakalo Ward, started a continuous tree-hugging protest along the railway line in Bungoma town. She aims to spotlight rampant corruption in public offices, challenging anti-graft agencies to intensify their efforts. Onyango traveled from Nairobi to conduct this demonstration in her home county for greater symbolic impact.
She confirmed her family knows about the protest and its location. The participant stated that she will neither consume food nor water for the entire duration of the challenge. A designated monitor is present to verify the attempt, which follows a growing trend of similar tree-hugging protests in the country.
The action was inspired by earlier record-setting attempts, including one by environmentalist Truphena Muthoni. Another individual, pastor James Irungu, previously surpassed that mark but collapsed from exhaustion near the end.
