Cameroon crumbles as Paul Biya, 92, plots another term

President Paul Biya announced Friday that Cameroon will hold its presidential election on October 12. The 92-year-old leader has not definitively stated whether he plans to compete for another term. Biya ranks as Africa's second-longest-serving president, trailing only Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang. His frequent absences for medical treatment abroad have sparked death rumors that required official government denials. The west African nation faces this crucial electoral moment amid mounting political uncertainty.

Four decades of Biya's leadership have generated significant domestic turmoil for Cameroon. Government forces continue battling a separatist insurgency within English-speaking regions that has displaced thousands of students and triggered violent confrontations. Cross-border attacks from Nigeria-based Boko Haram militants have compounded security challenges. Persistent corruption allegations have further undermined public confidence in state institutions. These crises have defined much of Biya's extended presidency since he assumed power in 1982.

Several prominent political figures have abandoned their longtime allegiance to challenge Biya's potential candidacy. Tourism Minister Bello Bouba Maigari resigned last week to pursue the presidency. Employment and Vocational Training Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary similarly departed his position to mount his campaign. Both former allies position themselves as viable successors to the aging president. Biya secured victory in 2018 with more than 70 percent support, though observers documented widespread electoral irregularities and reduced voter participation due to ongoing violence.
