A Kampala court imposed a 21-month sentence on a car wash employee who admitted to taking more than 50 million shillings from a customer's automobile. Vincent Mugabi, age 29, received the punishment on Tuesday from Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi at Buganda Road after settling with the victim through plea negotiations.
Mugabi worked at Red Basket Washing Bay and Restaurant across from Spear House on Jinja Road when he removed foreign currency and local bills from attorney Nasser Sserunjogi's Toyota Land Cruiser on July 13, 2024. The stolen items consisted of $3,300, 9,000 euros, and 2.5 million shillings. Sserunjogi had employed Mugabi's services for 11 years and regularly left valuables in vehicles without previous incidents.
Officers apprehended Mugabi at Tek Country Gardens in Buwama within the Mpigi district and recovered 2.9 million shillings plus 5,200 euros. Because Mugabi had already served one year, two months and 13 days awaiting trial, approximately six months remain on his sentence. The agreement requires him to repay Sserunjogi within half a year after release. Kayizzi characterized the crime as a significant violation of customer confidence.
