Centre blasts fake polls as social media noise

A South African advocacy organization has rejected online opinion polls that claim to reflect public sentiment, calling them unreliable and disconnected from actual community perspectives. The Centre for Alternative Information RSA issued its critique on Sunday through spokesman Siyabulela Mavimbela, who said such surveys depend on narrow social media discussions rather than rigorous research methods. The group warned that these efforts attempt to shape opinion through biased framing that cannot survive basic examination.

Mavimbela emphasized that legitimate assessments of public attitudes require direct community engagement and verified information instead of digital platform noise shaped by individual interests. The statement arrives as South Africa confronts growing problems with false information spreading through online channels, where more than 84 percent of Africans get news primarily from social networks. The country has 26.7 million active users who spend roughly three and a half hours daily on these platforms.

The center maintains that democracy depends on authentic dialogue grounded in facts rather than selective content from vocal minorities. Officials argue these flawed polls ignore the experiences of ordinary citizens while amplifying echo chambers removed from ground conditions.
