Chief Justice responds to removal petitions

Chief Justice Torkornoo has replied to President Mahama about petitions asking for her removal. She sent her answer Monday, just before the 10-day deadline ended. Earlier, she had asked to see all three petitions against her. Reading them helped her answer every claim clearly.

People close to the matter say she also sent her answer to the Council of State. This step follows what the Constitution says must happen. Nobody has shared exactly what the petitions say. Reports hint they talk about how she manages her office and the decisions she made as leader. Lawyers and politicians have talked a lot about this case. Nobody has tried to remove a sitting Chief Justice through Article 146 in many years.

Ghana law says that when someone wants a Chief Justice removed, the President must first talk to the Council of State. They might need to pick a team to check if the claims are true. These rules keep judges free to make fair choices but also hold them responsible.

Torkornoo became Chief Justice in 2023. Many praise her deep knowledge of law. She worked at every level of Ghana's courts before reaching the top position. Her answer probably says she did nothing wrong and explains why each claim fails.

Everyone waits to hear what the Council of State tells the President to do next. Their advice will determine whether a special group must investigate these claims more deeply. How this ends could change both how freely judges work and how much regular people trust Ghana's courts.
