Court nixes discharge, accused in Mai Jeremiah case to defend themselves

Two men accused of rape must present their defense after a court rejected their request for dismissal. Thabo Blessing Dube and Martin Charlie face charges related to socialite Ashley Masendeke. The defense lawyers Shepherd Makonde and George Manokore argued that Masendeke gave inconsistent testimony. They claimed her statements lacked credibility and raised serious doubts about the allegations. The defense also said one witness testified that Masendeke had agreed to sexual activity with both men.

The court found enough evidence exists for the case to continue. Judges ruled the two defendants must defend themselves against the charges. Defense attorneys submitted video recordings from the location where the alleged crime took place. The legal team told ZBC News they are prepared to move forward with their case. Their second witness will give testimony when court resumes Monday.

Prosecutors say the men tricked Masendeke into visiting a house in Eastlea, Harare on April 30, 2025. The alleged assault happened at that location after they lured her there. Masendeke goes by the popular name Mai Jeremiah among her followers. The case has drawn significant attention due to her status as a well-known social media personality. Both defendants continue to deny the rape charges brought against them.
