CZI highlights smart farming as key to Zimbabwe's agricultural future

Zimbabwe must adopt smart farming to survive climate change impacts, according to the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries. The industrial group says climate protection has become essential rather than optional for the country's agricultural sector. Renewable energy investments are now vital for driving farm production forward.

Agriculture forms Zimbabwe's economic backbone and employs most citizens. The sector generates major export revenue, especially from tobacco sales that bring over one billion dollars each year. Poor crop yields have long troubled farmers and led to higher food prices across the nation.

The Agricultural Dealers and Manufacturers Association held its 2025 show from June 5 to 7 in Harare. Many companies displayed solar power and other clean energy systems designed for farmers. Research officer Macdonald Mutengo said these technologies help reduce farming costs and build climate resistance.

Smart farming tools like robots, precision watering systems and solar equipment are catching farmers' attention. These innovations help create data-driven agriculture that uses resources more efficiently. Better farm productivity can lower costs and boost crop yields significantly.

Kutsaga's hemp research stood out at the trade show as a promising development. The organization is creating hemp varieties suited for Zimbabwe and turning them into products like fiber boards. Hemp could replace tobacco if global markets restrict cigarette sales.
