Darboe rejects fake draft claims, backs 2020 constitution

Ousainu Darboe, who leads the top opposing party, the United Democratic Party, just released a video to clear up some rumors spreading on social media. People were talking a lot online after Darboe met privately with President Adama Barrow at the State House. Everyone wondered what the two political leaders discussed.

Darboe said the stories about a "Darboe draft" and a "Barrow draft" constitution aren't true. He explained, "I don't have my own draft. The only constitution I support is the one the Gambian people want. Nothing else." He thinks the talks with President Barrow will keep going. Darboe hopes they can agree on something good for the country.

He believes the best thing for Gambians is the constitution project. The government has already spent 116 million dalasi. Darboe feels President Barrow is smart enough not to let all that money go to waste. The UDP leader thinks they'll find a solution as they prepare for the 2026 elections.

According to Darboe, his party just wants a strong constitution that matches the Gambian people's hopes. He made it clear that the UDP's stance has always been the same. They believe the 2020 draft constitution is the only one that should go to the National Assembly. That's because it came from "broad and deep consultations" with Gambians at home and abroad. The UDP won't accept any other version.
