CoPG Leader Calls to Reject Gambias 2024 Constitution

The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) wants lawmakers to reject the 2024 draft constitution. Lamin Bojang, the group's spokesperson, says the constitution does not show what the people really want.

Mr. Bojang thinks President Barrow's government is trying to force a constitution on Gambians. He believes this will make the government less open. He said approving the 2024 draft will make things worse.

"The government fought with us against a ruler who wanted to stay in power forever," Bojang said. "But they have turned against us. They want to push through a constitution that will hide their bad actions. The National Assembly Members must stop this."

Bojang explained that a constitution is a country's most important document. He accused President Barrow of trying to give himself more power. Bojang said Barrow wants to protect himself from being charged with crimes after he leaves office, no matter what he does as president.

"The 2024 draft says government officials have to share what they own before taking office," stated Bojang. "But they do not have to tell what they got after leaving their job. We all know about the shocking reports from the National Audit Office. They show how government workers have misused public money. The same draft makes National Assembly Members share their assets before and after being in office. That is not right."

Bojang said Gambians will work hard to bring back the 2020 draft constitution for Parliament to consider. He also said the people will oppose the 2024 draft. "It does not serve the good of the nation," he stated.
