Melele trashes calls to rush Mutharika cabinet picks

Christopher Melele rejected pressure for President Peter Mutharika to accelerate cabinet selections after civil society groups criticized the slow pace of government formation. The Mzimba Institute for Development Communication Trust director told Malawi24 that deliberate appointments demonstrate sound judgment rather than administrative weakness. Mutharika has named five ministers and consolidated multiple portfolios since taking office.

Melele said critics should allow adequate time for the president to select capable officials who will serve citizens effectively. He argued that constitutional authority permits gradual ministerial announcements and disputed claims that vacant positions hamper public services. The president appointed Joseph Mwanamvekha to lead finance, George Chaponda to lead foreign affairs, Alfred Gangata to lead state matters, Roza Mbilizi to lead agriculture, and George Partridge to lead industrial development.
