Dausab on a Fairer Namibia

When Yvonne Dausab ended her tenure as justice minister, she dreamed of leaving behind a Namibian society where every person felt valued and appreciated. Her mission centered on pushing forward an ombudsman bill designed to strengthen the independence of that critical office and guarantee fairness across the country.

The proposed legislation aimed to fortify the ombudsman's ability to protect human rights, investigate potential mismanagement within public institutions, and oversee environmental protection efforts. Dausab emphasized that although no concrete evidence existed of executive interference, she wanted to reinforce the office's independence similar to how the judiciary operates.

Faced with both internal and external pressures to remove the ombudsman's office from the Ministry of Justice, Dausab navigated complex political waters. After thorough discussions, she and her team decided that waiting for the next administration to advance the bill would not harm them. She viewed these careful steps as part of her broader commitment to consistent, principled governance.

Reflecting on her career, Dausab shared a powerful personal narrative of transformation. She remembered herself as a 16-year-old from Katutra who boldly traveled to Zambia without connections, launching a three-year professional journey. Her approach to life centered on making small, consistent choices with integrity. She expressed deep respect for the president's decisions and maintained that their relationship remained warm despite her departure from the Cabinet.
