Deputy Head Charged with Extortion in School Project

Patricia Mwaruta, 51, is the deputy head at Zengeza 4 High School. She went to court in Harare because she was accused of trying to get someone to give her money unfairly.

The judge, Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa, let Patricia pay US$150 to stay out of jail. Patricia must come back to court on March 13.

Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti told the court what happened. The school wanted to make a water well, add solar power, and put up a big water tank. On January 9, a man with a company sent a paper stating how much money this would cost.

Patricia called this man later and said his offer was the best. She told him he could do the job. The whole job would cost about US$4,600.

The man started digging on February 4 after the school paid him US$1,500. When he dug down 60 meters, he asked for US$1,270 more to finish the work.

That's when Patricia did something wrong. She asked the man to give her US$400 secretly. She said if he didn't pay her, she would stop his job at the school.

The man felt this was unfair, so he told the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission about it. They made a plan to catch Patricia.

The police caught Patricia at the school after she took US$200 from the man. This money was part of the trap they set up.
