Dhaka’s roads get high-tech speed cameras, but will they work?

Bangladesh is launching automated traffic cameras to address dangerous driving conditions as urban growth strains road safety infrastructure, particularly in Dhaka. The Dhaka Elevated Expressway began testing video-based speed monitoring in early July as authorities plan broader deployment of artificial intelligence systems, red-light detectors and license plate recognition technology across high-risk intersections.

The initiative will connect with digital fine issuance platforms while using existing surveillance networks as command centers. Officials aim to reduce speeding, signal violations and lane infractions that contributed to roughly 40 percent of more than 4,000 crashes recorded last year in the capital. Target locations include Farmgate, Shahbagh and Airport Road. A full rollout may arrive by mid-2026, though challenges remain around infrastructure upgrades and public education.

Road Safety Foundation research examining 37,000 accidents identified flawed design, inadequate maintenance and missing safety features as persistent factors in fatalities nationwide. The organization called for redesigned danger zones, enhanced signage and stricter speed enforcement using technology. Experts cautioned that cameras alone cannot solve traffic problems without comprehensive system reforms and proper vehicle registration databases.
