Doctor calls for healthcare centre and fuel station at Ndiyona after food poisoning deaths

A doctor wants better medical care for people living at Ndiyona settlement. Dr Mathias Luemba works at Nyangana District Hospital and spoke at a recent community meeting. He told regional leaders that 20 people have died from food poisoning since 2023. The deaths happened at Ndiyona where no medical clinic exists. Community members must travel nine kilometers to reach the nearest hospital when they become sick.

Luemba asked officials to build a health center at Ndiyona settlement. The new facility would help patients receive faster treatment during emergencies. Serious cases could still go to the main hospital for advanced care. He also requested an intensive care unit for Nyangana District Hospital. Many patients arrive at the hospital needing immediate life-saving treatment.

The doctor explained another major problem facing emergency services. Ambulances often cannot respond quickly because they lack fuel. Drivers must travel nearly 100 kilometers to Rundu or Divundu for gas. This delay costs valuable time during medical emergencies. Most ambulances are old vehicles that break down frequently.

Former deputy prime minister John Mutorwa attended the meeting about these health concerns. He told current leaders they must address these problems since he has retired from government service. Regional officials discussed ways to improve medical care for residents. The meeting brought together traditional leaders and community members. Everyone agreed that better healthcare access would save lives at Ndiyona settlement.
