The Democratic Progressive Party claims Malawi leaders took cash meant for the Chikwawa district's Shire Valley project. Charles Mchacha spoke about this during a Sunday rally at Chikwawa Community Stadium. The party wants more support before national voting happens on September 16th this year.
Mchacha told the crowd that the World Bank stopped giving money because officials stole project funds. He said the World Bank is unhappy with how little progress has been made compared to how much money has been invested in the program. The transformation project started when his party ran the country through the Ministry of Irrigation with better results.
"Your districts make the whole country rich with electricity from Kampichira plus sugar from Illovo at Nchalo, but President Chakwera fails to help your area benefit," Mchacha told local people. He attacked the current leaders for breaking promises about building highways named after Sidik Mia and Gwanda Chakuwamba for Chapananga and East Bank roads.
The government was not ready to answer these claims when asked. Earlier at the same event, DPP Campaign Director Ben Khuleya criticized local Member of Parliament Owen Chomanika for stopping traditional chiefs from coming to the rally. Khuleya reminded everyone that the DPP helped Chomanika win his position in the 2019 elections.
Khuleya promised Chomanika would lose the next election because people lost faith in him. He called the current Climate Change Minister greedy and undeserving of another term representing Chikwawa North. "He left our party to join Malawi Congress Party and kept 200 young people away from our rally because he knows he'll lose the election," Khuleya claimed.
Several important DPP leaders attended, including youth director Norman Chisale, southern women's director Maria Mainja, party patron Dr. Joseph Mwandidya, and Yeremia Chihana. Multiple attempts to reach Chomanika for his response failed when nobody answered his phone.
