The Democratic Republic of the Congo plans to start talks on Monday about creating a unity government. A top official made this announcement on Saturday as the country faces growing security problems. Desire-Cashmir Kolongele Eberande, who advises the president on security matters, shared these plans with the public. He said they will release more details about the schedule in the next few days.
These talks will bring together many groups, including the ruling Sacred Union coalition, opposition parties both inside and outside parliament, community organizations, and well-known people such as former presidential candidates. President Felix Tshisekedi first mentioned these big political changes back in February. He wants to create this unity government to stop the fighting in eastern Congo from turning into a bigger war that could affect nearby countries.
The M23 rebels have taken over large areas in North Kivu and South Kivu since they came back in late 2021. Despite many attempts by regional and international groups to broker peace, fighting continues. The eastern part of Congo has lots of valuable minerals like coltan, tin, tantalum, and gold, which makes different armed groups fight to control these resources.
The United Nations reports about one million people have fled their homes since January 2025, including around 400,000 children. These numbers will probably increase as the fighting keeps going in the Kivu provinces. The country hopes the new unity government might help address this crisis.
