Elmina boat wrecks again, crews left with sinking hopes

A fishing vessel capsized at Elmina Fishing Harbour on Saturday afternoon when powerful waves drove the craft into underwater rocks. All 28 crew members survived the accident, but the eight-year-old boat sustained severe damage and broke apart. Strong winds pushed the vessel off course toward the rocky sea defense structure around 11:30 a.m. Water rushed through the hull after impact with submerged boulders.

This marks the sixth maritime disaster at the Central Region facility within three years, and the second incident this month. A previous accident occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, when Ghana's second-largest fishing vessel suffered extensive damage with 15 crew members aboard. Fishermen demand immediate harbor dredging to remove accumulated sediment, rocks, and debris that create navigation hazards. Harbor Manager Yeboah Asante confirmed dredging operations will begin soon to restore safe passage for fishing fleets.
