WAVE-Gambia teamed up with the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs to host a two-day seminar at the Baobab Hotel on Monday. They named the event "Uniting for Freedom of Religion or Belief: Advancing Dialogue, Inclusion, and Sustainable Peace in The Gambia." Various stakeholders attended, including lawmakers, civil society groups, and faith leaders, all concerned about religious freedom nationwide.
The Global Initiative Against Impunity backed this WAVE-Gambia project to build partnerships and highlight freedom of religion as vital for lasting peace. Priscilla Yagu Ceesay from WAVE-Gambia stressed the need to address religious persecution, especially for groups like Ahmadiyya Jamaat and the Ndigal Sect. ACEPA director Rasheed Draman reminded everyone that The Gambia once served as a model for religious tolerance. He warned that violating religious freedoms can cause broader social problems that harm democracy.
Justice Ministry representative Safiatou Nyang confirmed government support for religious freedom as protected in the constitution. She referenced disturbing TRRC testimonies about religious intolerance and called for action to shield vulnerable communities. Participants discussed topics ranging from pluralism to legal protections for human rights. They also examined government responses to TRRC recommendations regarding minority rights protection.
