Funcom plans a large beta test for Dune: Awakening from May 9 through May 12 before the game launches June 10. Players can request access through Steam or watch the Global LAN Party Broadcast from London and PAX East for one of thousands of free codes. Press outlets have already tested this beta version, which offers about 20-25 hours of gameplay across several regions with part of the first story act.
Players start by creating a character with choices about skills, home planet, and background before heading to Arrakis to find surviving Fremen. After your airship crashes, survival becomes the main focus as you gather resources, manage water supplies, and build shelter. The harsh desert environment presents dangers from sunlight exposure during the day, Sardaukar drones at night, and deadly sandworms that attack when players cross open sand areas.
Combat features both melee and active abilities from skill trees as players explore, find outposts, and eventually join either the Atreides or Harkonnen factions. The game uses Unreal Engine 5 with impressive visuals, but currently suffers from performance issues. These optimization problems might explain why Funcom delayed the release date from May 20 to June 10.
