French farmers roll 350 tractors through Paris over EU deal

French farmers just rolled hundreds of tractors into Paris over a trade deal they hate. Around three hundred fifty tractors clogged streets in a protest organized by the FNSEA agricultural union. They demonstrated against low incomes and a proposed EU-Mercosur trade agreement. Union president Arnaud Rousseau slammed the pact for lacking a vision supporting farmer sovereignty and food independence.

Rousseau argued that the lengthy negotiation period itself signals a flawed deal. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asserts the agreement includes robust safeguards for agricultural livelihoods. The deal aims to open markets with lower tariffs across sectors, including farming and chemicals. It also promises political cooperation on sustainability and climate action.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu proposed an agricultural emergency bill addressing water access and production means. His plan includes relaxing nitrate regulations and budgeting for sector revival. The FNSEA called for these promises to materialize into concrete actions immediately. Protest efforts are planned to continue in Strasbourg as the European Parliament considers final approval.

Farmers remain deeply skeptical of protections against imported agricultural goods. They argue the trade pact undermines local economies and fails to ensure fair competition. The protest highlights persistent tensions between EU trade ambitions and the demands of its agricultural workforce.
