G20 health talks focus on funding, fair care for all

Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla challenged G20 leaders to dismantle structural barriers hindering public health funding and robust primary care systems during the G20 Health Ministerial Meeting at the Ranch Resort. Speaking as South Africa chairs the G20 this year, Phaahla stressed that health investment is fundamental to global stability and economic growth.

Phaahla highlighted severe financial pressures facing health sectors worldwide, calling them proof that health spending delivers long-term security. He emphasized the meeting’s focus on concrete outcomes over discussion alone, stating the agenda reflects a determination to combat complex health threats through cooperation.

Key sessions targeted tuberculosis control and universal health coverage financing. Phaahla called the afternoon financing talks critical for exploring sustainable funding models and shielding national health budgets from global economic shocks. Delegates also addressed making the new HIV prevention drug lenacapavir affordable globally, noting its potential is wasted if cost blocks access.

The meeting concluded with a joint session of finance and health ministers, which Phaahla called essential proof that fiscal policy and health outcomes are inseparable. He argued that aligning these ministries turns health plans into funded action.

As G20 chair, South Africa aims to integrate its health priorities into the global agenda, drawing on national experience fighting HIV and tuberculosis. Phaahla urged bold thinking and unwavering solidarity, insisting solutions demand sustained effort. He pushed for tangible commitments to strengthen health systems worldwide, especially in poorer nations, as the summit closed.
