G20 leaders endorse critical minerals and climate action at South Africa summit

G20 nations meeting in Johannesburg adopted a joint statement addressing critical mineral supply chains, climate financing and global conflicts despite the American administration's absence from the African continent's inaugural summit. Member states are committed to preventing disruptions in accessing raw materials essential for renewable energy technology while supporting developing nations in extracting greater economic value from their natural resources beyond simple commodity exports.

The agreement called for just resolutions to ongoing violence in Ukraine, Sudan, Congo and the Palestinian territories based on United Nations principles. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized wealth disparity as a central concern, with leaders backing international financial system reforms to assist debt-burdened countries. The statement acknowledged the necessity of expanding climate funding from billions to trillions while promoting disaster warning systems for vulnerable populations, though it stopped short of endorsing fossil fuel elimination.
