Garwe Labels Ndebele King Imposter and Triggers Uproar

Zimbabwe laws cause problems between tradition and modern rules. The fight started when Local Government Minister Garwe called Bulelani Lobengula a fake king in a letter to Bulawayo Mayor Coltart. This shows how the Traditional Leaders Act from 1998 clashes with the 2013 Constitution. The old law only allows chiefs but ignores kings, though the Constitution says all cultural customs must be respected.

Bulelani comes from King Lobengula through five generations. Many Ndebele people see him as their rightful king after a ceremony in 2018. The Constitution protects ethnic groups and cultural rights, but the current law discriminates against Ndebele traditions. A king leads cultural practices without claiming separate territory from Zimbabwe.

Parliament needs to fix this problem before more conflicts occur. Courts can also help align the old law with the Constitution. Fixing this mistake would heal old wounds without threatening national unity. If officials update the outdated rules, kings can exist alongside chiefs without breaking the law.
