Getting the Hang of XenForo Forums and Nodes

The XenForo forum platform uses something called nodes instead of just forums and categories. Nodes work as the building blocks that create the structure of any XenForo site. They form a tree with parents and children, which helps organize everything neatly. The people who visit the site never see the word "node" because they see specific names like forum or category instead. The site managers set up these nodes through the control panel under the Forums section. XenForo has four different types of nodes that do different jobs. Categories hold other nodes and help organize them. Forums contain threads and posts where people talk to each other. Link forums take people to other websites when clicked. Pages show special information like rules or help guides.

All nodes connect in one big tree. Each node has one parent above it and can have many children below it. The display order number decides where nodes appear on the page. Site managers can drag and drop nodes to rearrange them easily. Most people set up their XenForo forum platform with categories at the top level and put content nodes inside them. For example, they might create a Support category with Troubleshooting and help forums inside it. Site managers can make certain users moderators for specific nodes. These moderators watch over that node and all its children. They help keep the forums running smoothly by removing bad posts and helping users who have problems. To make someone a moderator for a node, the site manager adds them through the moderator menu and picks which powers they should have.

The XenForo forum platform lets site managers control who can see each node. They set permissions for users or groups by clicking the permissions link for any node. Children nodes normally follow the same rules as their parent unless the manager changes them. If users cannot see a parent node, they cannot see any of its children either, even if the permissions say they can. Permissions need careful planning because they affect how the whole site works. Site managers can create private forums that only certain people can see. For example, they might want a staff room forum where only administrators and moderators can talk. First, they create a new forum and then mark it as private. After that, they give the Administrator and Moderator groups permission to view that node. Everyone else on the site cannot see this hidden forum at all.

Site managers can make forums that only paying members can access or spaces just for certain teams to work together. The permission system controls exactly who sees what across the entire forum. This helps keep some conversations private when needed. The control panel has all the tools needed to set up these special areas with just a few clicks. Site managers can create as many different nodes as they need and organize them in ways that make sense for their community.
