GMB establishes 2,000 grain collection points to boost national food security

Zimbabwe's Grain Marketing Board launched nearly 2,000 collection centers nationwide to handle the anticipated record harvest from the 2024/2025 growing season. The widespread network aims to cut farmer transportation expenses while preventing crop spoilage after harvest. Remote agricultural communities will benefit most from this expanded access to grain markets. Midlands Province leads with 372 facilities, while Masvingo and Manicaland provinces follow with 226 and 224 locations respectively. This decentralized approach strengthens the nation's food supply chain.

Maize cultivation expanded from 1.72 million hectares to 1.83 million hectares this season. Agricultural officials project maize production will reach 2.29 million tonnes. Traditional crops like sorghum, pearl millet, and finger millet should produce 634,650 tonnes combined. The total cereal harvest may exceed 2.93 million tonnes, creating a surplus of 1.2 million tonnes above domestic consumption needs. Favorable weather patterns with normal to abundant rainfall drove these exceptional yields across most farming regions.
