Gov Ditches Malawian Tech Firms for Foreign Fat Cats

Government offices and businesses favor foreign computer companies over local firms for major contracts. Clarence Gama leads the ICT Association of Malawi and spoke during their conference opening on Thursday. He said Malawian tech companies possess the needed skills but lose opportunities to overseas competitors. Local firms struggle to survive without access to large government technology projects. The association hopes their two-day meeting will change these unfair practices.

Reserve Bank Governor Mcdonald Mafuta Mwale responded for the government about certification concerns. He said local companies need better credentials to win trust from major clients. The governor praised progress made through mobile money services and digital payment systems. Financial institutions depend heavily on technology platforms created through partnerships with tech firms. These advances show the potential for stronger cooperation between banks and local computer companies.

National Bank of Malawi donated 20 million kwacha to sponsor the technology expo. William Kaunda heads their digital services department and explained the generous contribution. The bank wants to thank computer companies for helping drive business growth across recent years. Conference organizers chose the theme Accelerating Digital Economy with focus on innovation and sustainable development. Participants will discuss ways to boost technology inclusion throughout Malawi during the two-day event.
