Harare and Bulawayo get new radiotherapy machines soon

Officials finished checking all offers for new cancer treatment machines at main hospitals in Harare with Bulawayo. They plan to send papers to the national buying office this week for final approval. The government will spend $30 million from sugar taxes started in 2023 to buy modern radiation therapy equipment for public healthcare. Health Ministry leader Dr Aspect Maunganidze said they completed an important step in the buying process.

After the special committee reviews everything for fairness, contracts can be signed. The new machines will go to Parirenyatwa Hospital with Mpilo Central Hospital. Older equipment from these places will move to smaller hospitals in Gweru with Mutare. This helps spread cancer care to more areas across Zimbabwe. The changes will increase the number of public hospitals offering radiation therapy from two to four.

Money from taxes on sugary drinks pays for these important health projects. The government wants to buy linear accelerators, brachytherapy machines, and stereotactic radiosurgery units. These machines deliver careful amounts of radiation to kill cancer cells without harming healthy tissues nearby. They target tumors very precisely.
