Harare, Bulawayo homes get private power

Zimbabwe plans to connect 400,000 urban homes to electricity through private companies after the government authorized commercial firms to distribute and sell power. Energy Minister July Moyo said the program will begin in sections of Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, and Masvingo, as well as smaller centers where housing exists without electrical service.

Authorities placed advertisements seeking investors to participate in the retail distribution system. The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority works with the state utility to identify neighborhoods for private sector involvement. Officials will sign project support agreements that allow foreign investors to import equipment and repatriate profits.

The government aims for nationwide electricity access by 2030. The state power company struggles with aging infrastructure and rising demand from urban expansion. Private participation should reduce strain on the national utility while improving service reliability across fast-growing communities.
