Harare Mayor declares municipal tap water safe to drink despite concerns

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume told everyone the city tap water tastes great and poses no health risks. He made these bold claims after facing tough questions from the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission about dirty water problems. The commission called him to answer complaints about bad sewers and unsafe drinking water across the capital. Residents have been worried about getting sick from contaminated water supplies. Mafume appeared confident when he walked out of the private meeting.

The mayor said his water treatment workers check the quality every 30 minutes at Morton Jaffray plant. He bragged that independent labs also test the water to make sure it meets international safety rules. City health officers run their tests to double-check everything stays clean and drinkable. Mafume believes the strict testing prevents dangerous diseases from spreading through the water system. He wants people to trust the municipal water instead of buying expensive alternatives.

Mafume shocked many people when he claimed bottled water companies just repackage city water. He said these businesses take regular tap water and filter it again before selling it at high prices. The mayor thinks residents waste money buying bottled water when municipal supplies work just fine. He argued that treated city water actually protects people from serious waterborne illnesses. Mafume urged citizens to drink straight from their taps without any fear.
