ICU Blasts Gov to Bail Out State Media

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union wants government help for struggling state newspapers. The Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times face money problems that threaten their jobs. Union leader Morgan Ayawine raised these concerns during a regional conference on Friday. He said workers at these papers have missed salary payments.

He asked officials to provide new funding so these media outlets could stay relevant. Ayawine also urged the government to restart Neoplan Ghana Limited to make regular electric buses. This would help transportation issues and keep people employed. The union wants PBC Plc to receive emergency funds too. This company once employed 30,000 workers but currently has fewer than 1,000 people who haven't been paid for two years.

Ayawine emphasized that businesses need both money and workers as equal partners. Neither can succeed alone. The union elected new regional leaders, including Berlinda Cochrane as chairperson. The conference will happen before ICU-Ghana's bigger meeting in August 2025. Ayawine encouraged members to study the union constitution and suggest improvements.
