Imo Community Demands Release of Detained Youth Leaders

Community members from Umuagha want police to free two youth officials they say were wrongfully arrested. The detained men, Chima Mmeka and Chidera Mmeka, serve as youth leader and chief security officer, respectively. A relative named Obinna Mmeka claims the pair went to meet soldiers at a checkpoint but ended up jailed for alleged IPOB membership.

The men spent two months at 34 Artillery Brigade before being transfer to the Police Anti-kidnapping Unit. Obinna insists neither man belongs to IPOB nor participates in troublemaking activities. Their village has seen no recent IPOB or Eastern Security Network presence.

The situation began when military personnel arrested Chimaobi Ononiwu as a suspected IPOB member. Soldiers found he shared a WhatsApp group with the community youth leader. Ononiwu explained this was just a general community information channel for residents.

Soldiers invited several community officials to verify facts about Ononiwu. The youth leaders arrived with their smartphones containing the group chat. They were detained immediately. The vice president escaped detention because he had a basic phone without the app.

Obinna asks Governor Hope Uzodinma and Police Commissioner Aboki Dajuma to help free these respected community figures. He emphasizes that they remain responsible leaders dedicated to their village, not separatist group members.
