India and Saudi Arabia seal major fertiliser deal as Nadda pushes for deeper ties

Union Health and Chemicals Minister JP Nadda completed a weekend diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia that strengthened economic partnerships between both nations. The high-level delegation concentrated on expanding collaboration within the chemicals and fertilizers industries during meetings in Dammam and Riyadh. Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar bin Ibrahim Al Khorayef participated in discussions about enhancing cooperation across fertilizers, petrochemicals and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The talks produced concrete results through partnership agreements that will benefit both countries' agricultural sectors. Officials from both governments emphasized their shared commitment to deepening bilateral trade relationships.

Maaden signed comprehensive supply contracts with three Indian firms during the ministerial visit. IPL, KRIBHCO and CIL will receive 3.1 million metric tonnes of Diammonium Phosphate fertilizer annually under five-year agreements beginning in 2025-26. The contracts allow for potential five-year extensions pending mutual agreement between all parties. Saudi Arabia delivered 1.9 million metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer to India during 2024-25, representing a 17 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. Both nations expressed interest in expanding their fertilizer partnership to encompass urea and other essential agricultural inputs.

Nadda held separate meetings with Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud and Vice Minister of Health Abdulaziz Al-Rumaih. The Energy Minister discussed broader economic cooperation through the Strategic Partnership Council framework. Healthcare collaboration emerged as another priority area, with officials exploring opportunities in medical services, pharmaceuticals and digital health technologies. The meetings built upon agreements established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent state visit to the kingdom.
