Parliament received updates Wednesday about India's rare earth mineral reserves. The country possesses 7.23 million tonnes of Rare Earth Elements Oxide within 13.15 million tonnes of monazite found across coastal regions. These deposits span Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Hard rock formations in Gujarat and Rajasthan contain another 1.29 million tonnes. The Atomic Minerals Directorate conducts exploration activities throughout these geological areas.
The Geological Survey of India expanded resources by 482.6 million tonnes through 34 exploration projects. Export figures show 18 tonnes shipped during the past decade while imports remained zero. The External Affairs Ministry addresses supply chain disruptions caused by foreign export restrictions on rare earth magnets. Bilateral cooperation agreements exist with Australia, Argentina, Zambia, Peru and other nations. Khanij Bidesh India Limited seeks overseas mineral acquisitions, particularly lithium and cobalt assets. Government officials negotiate partnerships with Brazil and Dominican Republic for future rare earth development projects.
