Intel may abandon the leading-edge chip race as CEO Lip-Bu Tan weighs a foundry overhaul

Intel faces potential abandonment of advanced semiconductor manufacturing under new leadership from CEO Lip-Bu Tan. The company reported second-quarter operating losses despite implementing widespread workforce reductions. Team Blue may exit the race for cutting-edge processing nodes if external customer demand for upcoming technologies fails to materialize.

The foundry division faces uncertainty as TSMC maintains its market dominance, while Intel struggles to attract significant outside business. Billions of dollars invested in Intel Foundry Services have yet to yield the breakthrough needed for competitive momentum. Company filings reveal plans to potentially halt development of 14A and successor nodes without substantial external partnerships.

Current 18A technology targets internal products such as Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest processors. Intel warns that it may pause manufacturing expansion projects if customer milestones are not met. The semiconductor landscape may continue to see TSMC's supremacy as American chip manufacturing faces economic challenges in advanced node development.
