iPhone 16 Pro Max Powers New Wave of Indian Filmmaking

The iPhone 16 Pro Max stands out as a top video recording device with its three-camera system. Apple wants people to see their phones as the go-to choice for video creation. This led to a partnership with Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image for their program called MAMI Select: Shot on iPhone. The program pairs experienced filmmakers with newcomers who learn to make movies using just a smartphone.

Four famous Indian directors - Konkona Sen Sharma, Vikramaditty Motwane, Lijo Jose Pellissery, and Vetri Maaran - selected four aspiring creators for this project. Director Maaran believes iPhone filming offers complete personal expression during this democratic era of filmmaking. Participant Shalini Vijayakumar created a comedy-horror film called Seeing Red using the phone's 120mm lens, 4K 120 FPS feature, and 5x optical zoom for slow-motion scenes and detailed shots.

Another filmmaker, Amrita Bagchi, made a psychological thriller titled Tinctoria about the 1859 Bengal uprising. She praised the phone as a rocket machine that helped her finish work quickly when facing tight deadlines. Two other participants, Rohin Raveendran Nair and Chanakya Vyas, also completed projects showing how the phone replaces expensive camera equipment.

Apple plans camera upgrades for next year's iPhone 17 Pro models, aimed at video creators. These improvements will likely be included in the 2026 edition of the MAMI program.
