Jamaica confirms 11 leptospirosis cases after floods

Jamaica's Ministry of Health and Wellness has recorded 11 leptospirosis infections following Hurricane Melissa, with flood conditions increasing transmission risks for the bacterial illness. Dr Karen Webster Kerr, principal medical officer and national epidemiologist, reported cases across St James, Hanover, St Elizabeth and St Ann, including two from Catherine Hall, where flooding hit hardest.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie emphasized the importance of prompt medical attention for anyone experiencing fever, muscle pain, vomiting, or eye redness. The disease spreads through contact with infected animal urine, particularly from rodents, entering the body via skin breaks. Officials have cautioned residents to minimize floodwater exposure, use protective equipment and properly treat stored water supplies while public health workers conduct community outreach.
